VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Beach police are investigating after a man was fatally shot Thursday night outside a tobacco shop on the 600 block of Newtown Road.

Police say the call for the shooting came in around 8:47 p.m. Officers arrived and found 20-year-old Jamal Davis dead at the scene.

Police were at the Smoke Shop all day Friday, looking for evidence to help them figure out who shot Davis.

He is the father of a two-year-old son, the family confirmed when 10 On Your Side met them at the Smoke Shop in the Newtown Baker Crossing Shopping Center.

Jamal’s mother, Lawanda Davis, told 10 On Your Side through tears, “I have to bury my son.”

She was hugging her daughter, Layanna Jordan.

“My brother called me, and told me to come pick him up from the Smoke Shop because he had to baby sit for me,” Jordan said.

Just minutes later when Layanna arrived, Jamal was shot, and would die after running into the Smoke Shop, dropping to the floor.  “I pulled up to the Smoke Shop, and my brother is laying down on the ground bleeding.”

The family says some of Jamal’s friends told them he was not the intended target.  10 On Your Side doesn’t know how they knew that, and police are not releasing much information on this.

Police were searching the video from 7 cameras in and outside the Smoke Shop.  They gave no comment on what, if anything, was found, but Jamal’s family has lots to say about losing him.

“I’m just tired of this gun violence. I want Jamal back. I want Jamal back.  I want Jamal back.  He didn’t get a chance to live,” Layanna says through the tears.

The scene is not far from where four people were shot back on April 8 on Pickering Street in the Lake Edward area of the city. One person died in that shooting.
