Hayes man found guilty of assault in Newport News gets probation

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A Hayes, Virginia man has been convicted of assault and battery in connection to an incident at a 7-Eleven in Newport News.

Gregory Sawyers was accused of assaulting a customer and making a scene outside of a store off Warwick Boulevard. 

Sawyers was initially charged with assault and battery on a law enforcement officer, obstruction of justice, public intoxication and assault and battery.

The charges of assault and battery on a law enforcement officer, obstruction of justice and public intoxication were nolle prossed — or withdrawn — in court.

Sawyers received one year of unsupervised probation for the assault and battery charge.
