PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — An inmate from the Hampton Roads Regional Jail died after being transported to a local hospital for a medical emergency on Sunday.

Officials with the jail say 61-year-old Nathaniel Kennedy passed away at the hospital around noon.

Kennedy began his sentence at the jail in June of 2017. Shortly after he arrived, he was placed in the jail’s  medical housing unit because of his serious medical conditions.

The jail says a registered nurse is stationed in the medical housing unit 24 hours a day.

Portsmouth police were notified about the death and the jail is conducting an administrative review of the incident.

Kennedy was serving a three year, nine month sentence for multiple charges including shoplifting and possession of cocaine.
