HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Police are investigating a shooting that has left one man dead Saturday afternoon.
The shooting happened in the 2100 block of East Pembroke Avenue around 1:30 p.m. Dispatchers originally received an emergency for an altercation, but it was later confirmed to be a shooting.
When officers arrived they found a man outside with multiple gunshot wounds.
Officials say the victim was transported to a local hospital before succumbing to his injuries. He has been identified as 44-year-old Lawrence Antoine Fuller.
Police have arrested 23-year-old Miquel Johnston in connection to this homicide. Johnston has been charged with murder, use of a firearm in commission of a felony and shooting in an occupied dwelling.
Johnston is currently being held at the Hampton City Jail.
The investigation is still in the preliminary stages, but officials believe that the parties involved knew each other.
Michael Struther tells 10 On Your Side he lives above the apartment where the shooting happened. After hearing the gunshots, he went to see what happened.
“I seen the man come out with an exit wound in his back, so I had to kick in what I could do because nobody else was here at the time,” said Struther.
Struther says the man collapsed face down in the grass and so he turned him over and began applying pressure to his gunshot wounds until police arrived.
“He was breathing for his life,” Struther said.
