Hampton man charged with assault in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A Hampton man is being accused of assaulting and threatening another man in Newport News.

Newport News police said 50-year-old Alfred Julius Richards Jr. was arrested following an alleged incident on Dec. 17 at an apartment in the 7300 block of River Road.

A 56-year-old Hampton man told officers a man known to him a “Alfred” assaulted him and threatened to harm him if he didn’t hand over money. This man pointed to an apartment as the suspect — identified as Richards — was walking out, police said.

Richards was arrested on scene on unrelated charges of obtaining money or signature, etc., by false pretense and larceny in connection to a November incident.

Police said Richards was served warrants the next day in connection to the River Road incident. He is charged with abduction: by force, intimidation or deception, misdemeanor assault and larceny.
