Half-court buzzer-beater sends Green Run to state tournament; Maury survives Norview

News

NORFOLK (WAVY) – Scope Arena errupted as senior guard Ashley James hit a near-halfcourt buzzer-beater as time expired to send Green Run High School to the Region 5A championship and the Class 5 state tournament.

James, who was named the District Player of the Year on Saturday morning, finished with 30 points.

“To be honest with you, man, I knew he was going to hit it,” said head coach Kenneth Harris. “That guy (James) is refusing to lose.”

With James’ dramatics, Green Run qualifies for its first state tournament since 1984.

“We just made history,” said James. “I don’t have no words for it. We’re going to celebrate, move on to the next (round), and try to win states.”

The following game was also a nail-biter, as the two-seed Maury survived Norfolk rival Norview 52-50. Junior big man Clarence Ruport connected on the game-winning free throws with only :02 seconds left on the clock to give the Commodores the one-point win.
