PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Gov. Ralph Northam has cleared the way for Mark Whitaker to run for Portsmouth City Council again.
Secretary of the Commonwealth Kelly Thomasson tells 10 On Your Side Northam restored Whitaker’s rights Feb. 4.
The former councilman was suspended from his seat in September after a judge sentenced him on three forgery counts. Whitaker was spared jail time, but faced a $7,500 fine.
Northam’s action means Whitaker will have his right to vote, run for office and serve on a jury restored. It does not undo Whitaker’s conviction.
