Gloucester man charged with obstruction in Newport News shooting


NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — One man is facing obstruction charges in connection to a shooting in Newport News that left another man seriously injured.

Newport News police said officers were called to Catina Way just after 4 p.m. on Thursday. Once there, officers found a 23-year-old man was found in the parking lot of the in the Auburn Pointe Apartments complex.

Police said the man was shot in the chest and leg, and was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

According to police, 22-year-old Thomas Turner, of Gloucester, was with the man who was shot when officers arrived on scene.

Turner was reportedly “belligerent and disorderly” and would not allow officers to properly assist the man shot. Officers detained Turner.

Police said an investigation found at some point Turner had a gun in his hand, fled the area and hid the gun from plain sight. Officers later recovered the firearm and spoke with a witness.

Turner has been charged with two counts of obstruction of justice.
