Gloucester daycare under investigation after child fractures skull in fall

GLOUCESTER, Va. (WAVY) — Court documents obtained by 10 On Your Side show the Sunshine Kids Family Daycare in Gloucester is under investigation for possible child abuse and neglect.

The paperwork says on September 21, a 7-year-old was climbing up to a zipline on the playground outside unsupervised when they fell and fractured their skull.

The child spent eight days at CHKD for treatment.

The home daycare is run out of a house on Horsley Street owned by Doug Hurd and his wife. 10 On Your Side stopped by to talk to them but they said they wouldn’t comment while it’s still an active investigation.

10 On Your Side also spoke with a neighbor who lives nearby. She didn’t want to be identified but says she wasn’t surprised to learn the daycare is under investigation.

“In the winter time when it’s cold I’ve seen children out there with no coats on, no adult supervision and that’s been an ongoing problem,” the woman explained. “You never see adults out there when the children are out there playing.”

The neighbor said she has a grandson in daycare, and even though this one is right by her house, she takes him to a different one.

10 On Your Side also reached out to the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office. They said it’s still a very active investigation and they’re not releasing any information at this time.
