‘Girls Got Grit’ 5K draw thousands to YMCA Camp Arrowhead

News

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Over 1,000 young girls and their families took on a new 5K adventure course at YMCA Camp Arrowhead on Sunday.

The event was put on by Girls on the Run, a program designed to inspire girls, recognize their strength and celebrate their uniqueness, according to their website.

Organizers say the girls have been meeting after school for 12 weeks to prepare for the 5K event. While they ran laps to build up endurance, volunteer coaches helped teach the Girls on the Run curriculum.

The curriculum is meant to prepare girls from 3rd grade to 8th grade for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living, according to the organization. Topics include healthy relationships, nutrition, managing emotions and more.

The event included food trucks, bounce houses, face painting, photo booths and ended with a “caping ceremony” for the girls who raised over $100 for the Girls on the Run scholarship fund.

10 On Your Side’s Aesia Toliver served as one of the emcees for the special event.
