NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Four apartment units were damaged by a fire at a complex in the Denbigh section of the city Saturday evening.

Newport News Fire Department officials say they got the call about the fire just before 5 p.m.

When they arrived on the scene, they found a two-story apartment building off of Diplomat Court with smoke showing from the outside.

Firefighters had the fire under control within about 15 minutes. There were no reported injuries.

The Red Cross says they are assisting five people that were displaced.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The fire department says it is very important to have properly installed, operable smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in your home.

They will install smoke alarms for free for any Newport News homeowner if you just call the Smoke Detector Hotline at (757) 247-8888 or visit their website.
