Former Vice President Joe Biden to visit Newport News steelworkers


NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Former Vice President Joe Biden will meet with steelworkers in Newport News on Friday. 

Biden will be meeting with the United Steelworkers Local 8888 during the hustle of afternoon shift changes at Newport News Shipbuilding at the 46th Street gate at 3:30 p.m.

The former vice president will shake hands with hourly workers, and visit union leadership.

The Newport News Shipyard represents a key voting block in the midterm and 2020 elections and is a frequent stop for politicians, including current President Donald Trump

Union president Charles Spivey shared his excitement about the event in a statement, “We just want to acknowledge Joe Biden’s outstanding record for working families and to thank him for his unwavering support of Barack Obama, the first African American president to serve eight years in the White House.”

The Steelworkers endorsed and strongly supported the Obama-Biden ticket. The union has not taken a position for the 2020 race.

Jill Biden, former second lady of the United States, will also be in town Saturday to help christen the future USS Delaware attack submarine. Designated SSN 791, the future USS Delaware with be the seventh named after The First State and the 18th Virginia-class attack submarine. 

Construction started in 2013 and delivery is set for 2019.
