VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A man who worked at the Virginia Beach Police Department for 20 years has been charged with sexually assaulting a minor.

Virginia Beach police say Mark David Johnson, 48, was arrested Wednesday by VBPD’s Special Victims Unit and charged with forcible sodomy of a minor.

WAVY’s Andy Fox reports the victim in this case is a girl under the age of 13. Johnson and the victim both knew each other, according to police.

Johnson was arraigned on the charges in a hearing Thursday morning. A bond hearing has been set for Friday, March 29. Johnson did not qualify for a public defender.

Johnson was with the department for two decades before leaving in 2017, police say.

Johnson arrived for his video arraignment, he was confused. He thought he might be getting bond. However, Juvenile and Domestic Relations Judge Tanya Bullock said that hearing would have to wait until Friday.

Thursday’s video arraignment was for the reading of the felony charge against Johnson, one count of forcible sodomy, which police say happened between August 29, 2015, and August 28, 2016.

Johnson has since moved to Minnesota, but one neighbor who spoke through her door remembers him, “Yes, I know what he’s charged with. I read that … I was surprised, yes, but I really don’t know him.”

It’s unclear why exactly Johnson left the force in 2017, but we do know the alleged crime was in the year before he left the force.

10 On Your Side asked the neighbor what type of neighbor was Johnson.  “He wasn’t really friendly. He was mean.”

Apparently, Johnson had issues with her dog, “Yes, he yelled at me about my dog … He said my dog was trespassing. My dog was on his property.”

Johnson refused a jail house interview.

10 On Your Side also don’t know much about how he returned to Virginia from Farmington, Minnesota, where he told the judge he lives with his wife, stepson and his two sons.

“I was surprised about the charge. I wouldn’t think anybody on this street was like that. Everybody pretty much keeps to themselves … but I never imagined he would do something like this.”
