NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A former Norfolk Navy sailor will spend a little over three years in prison for possessing child pornography.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Wednesday that 29-year-old Dustin Lee Sharbono downloaded hundreds of images and videos of child pornography prior to a deployment.

The images were discovered after Sharbono misplaced his cellphone in the common area of a ship. Another sailor who picked up the phone tried to identify the owner, and found the images within the Kik Messenger app.

Prosecutors said an NCIS investigation discovered a laptop and tablet that contained even more child pornography. Sharbono had attempted to hide his activity using an application called “Hide it Pro” — which stores files on a seemingly benign folder.

Metadata from Kik confirmed he downloaded the images in the weeks leading up the deployment, while his ship was in port.

Sharbono is also facing 20 years of supervised release following his prison sentence.
