Former Chesapeake sheriff’s lieutenant convicted of financial-related crimes

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A man who was indicted on multiple financial-related crimes while he was a Chesapeake sheriff’s lieutenant was found guilty this week.

Joshua Sawyer, who spent 18 years as a deputy, was convicted on 12 counts of obtain money by false pretense, issuing multiple bad checks and 10 counts of bad checks on Tuesday.

The Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office confirmed Sawyer was fired following his conviction.

Sawyer is scheduled to be sentenced on May 9.
