NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A grand re-opening ceremony was held at 105 Hampton Roads area Food Lions Wednesday to unveil major improvements to the grocery stores.

The company made a significant $168 million capital investment in these stores this year, which included remodeling the stores and hiring 4,000 additional associates.

Following Wednesday’s ribbon-cutting ceremonies, the first 100 customers received free tote bags and a mystery gift card valued up to $200.

Among the changes customers will see:

* Fully remodeled stores featuring new signage and groupings of like products, to make it easier to locate items faster;

* A more efficient checkout process

* Expanded variety and assortment across all departments, such as more local produce in the “Local Goodness” section, an expanded variety of craft beer, limited reserve wines, and more local, natural, organic and gluten-free items;

* Hand-battered chicken and a greater selection of easy and affordable complete meals for families and a wider variety of grab-and-go items and pre-sliced deli meats and cheeses, which are sliced fresh daily.

Additionally, six stores include expanded deli departments that offer items such as handmade artisan pizza and premium coffee. Twelve of the stores feature walk-in garden coolers. And more than 40 stores in the market now include a wing bar assortment for customers looking for hot, quick meal solutions.
