HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – First Lady Melania Trump was in Hampton Roads on Wednesday morning visiting with troops and their families.
Mrs. Trump made a quick stop at Joint Base Langley-Eustis.
There were hundreds of service men and women in the crowd along with children from Bethel Manor and Burbank Elementary Schools.
The First Lady was met with cheers and lots of excitement as she took the stage.
“I’ve been teaching for a long time and when we told them, I’ve never heard kids scream louder than when we told them we were coming here,” said Michelle Rumschlag, a 5th grade teacher at Bethel Manor Elementary.
FLOTUS addressed hundreds in the crowd, many who just returned from deployment
“I’m honored to be able to say welcome home and thank you for answering the call of duty,” she said.
It was a short speech but one that was full of gratitude.
“We know we are free because you are brave and I speak on behalf of my husband when I tell you we are forever grateful for your service,” FLOTUS said.
“It’s just a really great experience overall and we’re really happy that she comes and supports us,” said Stephen Prater, a member of the U.S. Air Force.
She also recognized the families of those serving, too.
“We know that you often endure time apart which also comes with a degree of uncertainty and some of you are here today while your loved ones are far away,” Mrs.Trump said.
Students and teachers in the crowd said it’s an experience they won’t forget.

“It was amazing. It’s speechless to describe the words of seeing her. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity,” said student Xavier Faavi.
“This is a big deal for her to say all those kind words about supporting the troops and their families. It meant a lot for these kids,” Rumschlag said.
After visiting JBLE, the First Lady made a couple of other stops including at the USS George H.W. Bush aircraft carrier before making her way back to Washington D.C.
