Firefighter injured while responding to fire in Mathews County

MATHEWS COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — A firefighter was hurt while battling flames at a Mathews County business on Monday.

The Mathews County Sheriff’s Office said there was call for a fire at Bayside Joinery Company — in the Cobb Creek area — just before 1 p.m. No one was inside the building at the time.

Video from the Gloucester-Mathews Gazette Journal showed heavy smoke billowing out of the building.

A firefighter was burned on the arm while responding to the fire.

Units from Gloucester and Middlesex County assisted the Mathews Volunteer Fire Department.

The building is considered a total loss, according to the sheriff’s office.

Officials don’t believe there was any foul play in the fire. The cause is under investigation.
