VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Three animals died Monday afternoon in a house fire in Virginia Beach, officials say.

Virginia Beach firefighters were dispatched to the 1900 block of Bunnell Court located in the Glenwood section of the city around 3:30 p.m. Crews reported seeing heavy smoke and flames coming from the garage and attic area of the home.

Officials said the conditions forced firefighters to attack the fire from the outside, before going inside the burning house.

‘The house’s owner said he was doing some welding on one of his cars when he had an accident with the equipment that he claimed started the fire.

He tried to put out the flames with two extinguishers, but was eventually forced to get outside. Officials said he safely escaped with one dog, but another dog and two cats died in the fire.

The fire was marked out around 5 p.m. No one was injured.

Officials said the cause of the fire is still being investigated.
