GLOUCESTER, Va. (WAVY) — Firefighters have responded to four separate brush fires Friday evening in the Guinea area of Gloucester County.

Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue officials said at one point about 75 to 80 acres were on fire. The call for the fires came in at 7:10 p.m.

They say the fires were contained primarily to the Jenkins Neck area.

After surveying the area Saturday morning, Abington says on their Facebook over 200 acres were burned.

Units from York County Fire and Safety (two tankers and a chief), Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue (a tanker, brush truck and engine) and Navy Regional Mid-Atlantic (a brush truck, tanker and engine) assisted Abingdon firefighters.

Chief Meteorologist Don Slater says dry air and high winds brought on by the severe weather system dramatically increased the risk of fires breaking out in the area.
