NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A fighter jet made an emergency landing at Newport News-Williamsburg International Aiport on Thursday, veering off one runway and skidding across a second before coming to a rest.

The pilot of the single-seat MK-58 Hawker Hunter walked away uninjured, confirmed a spokesperson with the aiport. It’s unclear what the emergency was.

It happened around 10:15 a.m. The spokesperson says the jet belongs to a locally-based defense contractor that works with military pilots.

The landing closed all operations at the airport until about noon. One runway reopened at 11:54 a.m., while the other reopened around 2:30 p.m.

The incident was reported to National Transportation Safety Federal Aviation and Federal Aviation Adminstration.
