RICHMOND, Va (WAVY) — The number of fatalities reported in crashes over the Memorial Day weekend decreased in 2018 compared to previous years, Virginia State Police say.

State police said Tuesday there were six deaths reported in crashes statewide across the holiday weekend.
One of the six fatalities happened in Newport News, where 36-year-old James Laughlin was killed in a crash near the intersection of Warwick Boulevard and City Center Boulevard.
The other five traffic deaths were reported in the counties of Chesterfield, Grayson, Nelson, Pittsylvania and Rockbridge, according to state police.
Three of the people killed in those crashes were not wearing seat belts and were ejected after their vehicles overturned, state police said.
