NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — With a few shovels of dirt, Newport News city officials and Ferguson employees broke ground on their city center site that will soon hold more than 400 employees.
“It’s also going to help the city because we’ll have enough people here to grow and support the other businesses and restaurants,” said Mayor McKinley Price.
Ferguson is the largest supplier of residential and commercial plumbing supplies in the U.S.
10 On Your Side told you last year that the company already had roots in the city and 1,000 employees, but they wanted to expand.
Virginia competed against several states to keep the business here and won.
“We were chosen for this company to stay here and it’s a huge company, a $15 billion company,” Price said.
“It’s jobs for our local residents, it’s bringing in associates and future associates from different parts of the country and other parts of the world,” said Ferguson CEO Kevin Murphy.
Murphy talked about the reason this spot made the cut.
“To have a great work life balance, the green space that’s associated with our building and being able to come out to the fountain, retail, it’s more urban, it’s more progressive for our associates,” Murphy said.
When will this building be finished?
“We would love to say were going to be in here before 2 years this time, but we’ll press on as hard as we possibly can,” Murphy said.
