Fallen service members honored in ceremony at JEB Little Creek-Fort Story

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story held a bell tolling ceremony Thursday to remember fallen service members who were based at JEBLCFS.

“It’s important that we say their names, we see their faces, so it becomes real, because sometimes over time it’s not real anymore, because you don’t know them,” said Captain Joey Frantzen.

88 fallen heroes from the base who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty since Sept 11, 2001, were honored.

The ceremony was held in recognition of the upcoming Memorial Day holiday.

“I’m not sure if it’s a large or small number, I think anytime you lose a single person, if you’re that family, or your that spouse, you’re that child that grows up without a mom or dad, it’s a huge number,” Frantezen said.

The commander of JEB Little Creek-Fort Story says this year’s ceremony pulled on his heart strings even more than usual.

“For us it was really, it kind of hit home this year because we lost our deputy commander just in March, less than two months ago, so when you say his name, you understand the sacrifice and meaning of Memorial Day,” added Frantzen.

Frantzen says he hopes everyone will take time out of their weekend, even if it’s just a few moments, to honor our fallen heroes.
