OUTER BANKS, N.C. (WAVY) — The Network for Endangered and Threatened Sea Turtles (N.E.S.T.) is encouraging restaurants in the Outer Banks to stop using plastic straws.

The group says over 500 million plastic straws are used in the U.S. each day and many of them end up in the ocean.

Plastic, particularly plastic straws, is considered to be the most harmful, man-made item to endangered sea turtles. According to N.E.S.T., the sea turtles mistake the straws for food when they are floating in the water.

The group is asking restaurants to only provide straws on request of their customers and offer paper straws as an alternative to plastic.
