VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Officials with Emmanuel Lutheran Church and School in Virginia Beach confirm their preschool is closed for good, effective immediately.
Now, parent’s like Trisha Hemenway, whose children were set to attend, are rushing to find somewhere else for their kids to go.
“It’s just ridiculous for us to have to scramble to find this day care because we’re all working people and we really simply just don’t have time to do this,” said Hemenway.
Hemenway says she found out the school was closing through a Facebook post this morning — just one week before classes were supposed to start.
“I was appalled and outraged because it lacked a lot of details, it didn’t tell us why,” she explained.
She says this decision took everyone by surprise.
The closure displaces about a hundred children and nearly a dozen teachers.
“It’s just a shame we can’t have this continued relationship with these great people because of something random like this,” Hemenway said
10 On Your Side went to the school to find out what led to them closing, but was told “no comment.”
“I’m sure they have a reason but it is very unfortunate at the very last minute before school starts,” said Dianne Macdonald, the director of Thalia Day School,
Thalia is located just down the street from Emmanuel Lutheran.
Macdonald says the closure there has led to a busy day for them.
“Right now we have taken in seven children from Emmanuel Lutheran. We’re still doing tours, we’re still signing children up.”
Macdonald is also trying to lend a helping hand to the teachers who just lost their jobs.
“We are interviewing teachers from the school as well trying to help out”
“We already had things set and prepared, it’s just chaos at this point,” added Hemenway.
