ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WAVY) — Elizabeth City’s brief dance with Florence made the Pasquotank River choppy, but luckily there wasn’t much flooding.
Waves splashed against the shore as one group took a swim.
“We’ve always went swimming around the area, so hurricane or no hurricane, were swimming,” said neighbor Steven Spisak.
Thankfully the crew didn’t go too far out.
“We stay right by the dock, all of us are good swimmers,” said Mark Vaughn.
And they didn’t stay in long because they got tired fighting the waves.
As things calmed down for this area, the emergency operations center de-activated and the shelter closed too.
But as people packed up, they left organizers with a positive message.
“One of the biggest things we hear as they’re leaving is thank you so much. I’m glad we didn’t need it but you were hear for us,” said shelter manager Carol Watkins.
She says Thursday night they housed more than 150 people.
