Elderly man dies after sustaining severe burns in Norfolk house fire

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — An elderly man has died after being taken to the hospital with severe burns Thursday morning in a Norfolk house fire.

Dispatch received a call for a fire in the 500 block of Beechwood Avenue, in the Glenwood Park neighborhood.

“The fire scared me a little bit,” said neighbor Jonathan David Edwards.  “I saw the smoke coming out.”

Crews arrived on scene to find fire and smoke at the front of the house, according to Battalion Chief Harry Worley with Norfolk Fire-Rescue. The fire has since been marked under control.

Worley said the 92-year-old man transported died at the hospital.

“I looked out the window and I saw the ambulances and the fire engines and everything,” said neighbor Nancy Edwards.

Edwards says her neighbor found the man.  “She’s the one that said that she found him and that she was taking him breakfast and he was laying on the floor,” she said.

Official say the fire does not appear to be suspicious, but the Fire Marshals and Norfolk Police Homicide unit are investigating because it was fatal.

“There’s just a lot more cars around here than usual. There’s a bunch of detectives hanging around,” said neighbor Don Bruce.  “There’s people hurting for him, you know?”

The fire came less than a day after firefighters battled a massive blaze at a business in the Park Place area of the city.
