Drugs thrown over fence of Rivers Correctional Institution; 1 arrested after manhunt

HERTFORD COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) – A massive manhunt has concluded with the arrest of one man after there were reports of drugs being thrown over the fence of Winton Rivers Correctional Institution in Hertford County early Friday morning.

According to Hertford police, the manhunt started in the early morning hours of Nov. 2 when a report was made that there were two individuals throwing packages containing narcotics over the fence of the prison. One suspect was able to be taken into custody, but the other ran into the woods in the surrounding area.

That is when the manhunt started. 

The search was a combined effort on the part of Hertford County Sheriff’s Office, N.C. State Highway Patrol, Murfreesboro Police, Ahoskie Police, Northampton County Sheriff’s Office, corrections officers from Rivers, and a citizen of Hertford County. The manhunt ended in the area of Highway 158 near Rivers Correctional Institution, where the male suspect was taken into custody.

The incident occurred outside of the prison and there were no escaped prisoners. In a Facebook post, Hertford Sheriff Dexter Hayes thanked the supporting agencies for their assistance.
