PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – New information from Virginia State Police indicates an interstate shooting Monday afternoon was road rage.
Officers and troopers responded around 4:35 p.m. to the report of a person shot inside a vehicle on I-264 West, between the Downtown Tunnel and Victory Boulevard in Portsmouth.
State Police say the preliminary investigation indicates that a man driving a white Nissan Xterra was involved in a road rage situation with another driver. At some point someone in the other vehicle shot at the Nissan, wounding its driver. The driver of the Nissan was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where he is being treated for life-threatening injuries.
The suspect vehicle may be a black Volvo SUV, according to State Police.
I-264 West between the Downtown Tunnel and Victory Boulevard was closed to traffic and detours were put in place. Around 10 p.m., 264 westbound at the Downtown Tunnel reopened, and 264 later reopened from Portsmouth Blvd. to Victory Boulevard.

Portsmouth Police also responded, but Virginia State Police is taking the lead on the investigation.
