CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) – One man is dead after a tractor-trailer plunged off an overpass in Chesterfield Sunday.
The single-vehicle crash shut down traffic in the area of Route 10 and Iron Bridge Road right below Route 288 in Chesterfield.
Around 11:40 a.m., troopers responded to the scene after a tractor-trailer traveling south on Route 288 in the right lane swerved to the left to avoid a slow-moving vehicle in the right lane.
The driver lost control and the tractor-trailer went off the left side of the Route 288 overpass.
The tractor-trailer hit a guardrail, struck the bridge wall and landed below the overpass on Route 10.
The male driver was transported to VCU Medical Center in Richmond, where he later died. State police are still in the process of notifying his next of kin.
The tractor-trailer was empty at the time of the crash, police said.
