Driver facing charges after police chase spans two cities

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A driver has been charged after police say they led officers officers on a chase through two cities overnight.

Chesapeake police said the chase started in the area of Campostella Road and Liberty Street around 1:20 a.m. after officers pulled over a 2013 BMW for a moving violation.

The driver initially stopped before taking off, police said.

Police said the driver drove through the Berkley area of Norfolk, reaching speeds as high as 100 mph.

The chase ended after around 10 minutes in the 5700 block of Granby Street — around six miles from where the chase started — after the suspect’s car suffered a mechanical failure.

Police said the driver, 38-year-old Richard Shelton, of Virginia Beach, was taken into custody after a short foot chase. Shelton has been charged with felony eluding, driving with a revoked License and failure to obey lane markings.

The incident remains under investigation.
