YORK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — A Virginia State Police trooper was taken to the hospital Monday night after a driver rear-ended their patrol vehicle in York County.
State police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Anaya says the crash happened around 8:15 p.m. on Interstate 64, near Route 199.
Anaya says the trooper was in the right lane, with emergency lights on, investigating a crash that happened in a work zone.
The right lane was coned-off at the time. Anya says Deandre Lamont Gillis, who was driving a 2001 Toyota Avalon, slammed on his brakes to avoid hitting the traffic that was slowing down ahead.
However, Gillis lost control and hit the back of the trooper’s vehicle.
Anaya says the trooper was taken to Riverside Hospital in Williamsburg where he was treated for minor injuries.
State police initially said Monday that efforts were being made to find a suspect vehicle, which had reportedly fled the scene.
It is unclear whether Gillis fled the scene after the crash. Anaya says he has been charged with reckless driving.Stay with WAVY.com for the latest developments.
