Driver charged after man hit, killed in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A driver was charged after police say he hit and killed a man in Newport News over the weekend.

Police say officers were called to an auto-pedestrian incident around Mercury Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue around 3:40 a.m. Saturday.

Officers found a man was found dead in the road. Police later identified the man as 63-year-old Tony Brown.

Investigators say a white 2013 White Nissan Altima was driving southbound on Jefferson Avenue when the vehicle hit Brown and fled the scene.

The driver — identified as 29-year-old Jamar Terrell Cooper — returned to the scene while officers were still investigating.

Police say Cooper is charged with involuntary manslaughter.
