Driver charged after crash involving HRT bus injures 12

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Ten passenegers and the driver of an HRT bus were injured after being hit by another vehicle on Saturday.

Newport News Police say that officers responded at 8:50 a.m. to the 12000 block of Jefferson Avenue for an accident involving the HRT bus and a dark-colored Chrysler. 

The investigation revealed the bus stopped to pick up passengers when the driver of the Chrysler hit the bus. 

The driver of the Chrysler was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Police said the driver, 33-year-old Don Desimone Jr. of Morehead City, North Carolina, was charged with reckless driving. He was later released from the hospital after recovering from his injuries.

The bus driver and 10 passengers were transported to a local hospital for evaluation with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. 

The bus was on HRT’s Route 107, according to HRT spokesperson Tom Holden.

As a result of the crash, the bus was not drivable, according to officials.
