Dozens meet near Scott Taylor’s office pushing for immigration change

Residents from all over Hampton Roads gathered near Congressman Scott Taylor’s office on Thursday night hoping their concerns about immigration would be heard.

“I’m just a person being kept awake at night worrying about babies being taken from their mommas,” said neighbor Susan Posey.

Images of young kids being separated from their parents has spread online, and sparked outrage.

The event was put on by Indivisible 757, and the organizer of the event says even though the issue has started at the border, it’s affecting people all over, including in Hampton Roads.

“We’re a group of concerned citizens in Hampton Roads very interested in making sure that we do the right thing by people who are knocking on our doors fleeing violence coming here seeking asylum,” said organizer Kimberly Tucker.

Tucker was just one of the people who got up in front of the crowd to share her message.

Others came holding signs expressing their thoughts.

Posey says they gathered near Taylor’s office hoping for change.

“I think you can reach them through self interest if you can show there are so many people that are going to be opposed to them in this,” Posey said.

10 On Your Side reached out to Congressman Taylor’s office today for comment.

They responded: “Congressman Taylor is in Washington, DC working on a new immigration plan that secures the border and deals with the family separation issue. Parents should be kept together with their children, but our nation’s laws must be enforced. Washington Democrats and our Washington-hand picked opponent want the families to simply be released in our country, which is counter to our laws.”
