HAMPTON, Va (WAVY) — Dozens of families walked away with essential back to school supplies in Hampton today as a part of “Get Fit” Family Day.
The Hampton Chapter of the NAACP along with the Hampton Commonwealth’s Attorney Anton Bell, Hampton police, fire and the sheriff office came together to give back to their community.
The line was out the door Saturday for families at the Y.H. Thomas Community Center. Community members in need had access to free school supplies, free haircuts, food and immunizations.
“Get Fit” organizers say this is more than just providing a healthy outlet for children and families but it also lets people know the community cares.
“No one cares how much you know, until they first know how much you care. it’s gong to leave an imprint on them that someone cares about me. I matter, I have worth, I have value,” Bell said.
More than 120 backpacks were given out at the event.
