AVON, N.C. (WAVY) — A windsurfer reported missing south of Avon, North Carolina Monday evening was safely rescued, officials say.
The Hatteras Island Rescue Squad said in a Facebook post the windsurfer went missing in the Haulover Day Use Area, which is between Avon and Buxton. The area, which is also known as the “Canadian Hole”, has been a popular site for windsurfers as well as kayakers and fishers.
Hatteras Island crews and National Park Service rangers found the man one mile off shore.
Officials said there was little little daylight left and it was quickly growing dark and foggy when the call was received. The man was uninjured and was returned to his family.
