YORK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — A two-vehicle crash on Interstate 64 in York County caused massive delays on both sides of the highway for several hours Tuesday morning.
Virginia State Police said the crash happened just after 2:30 a.m. near Penniman Road on the westbound side of the interstate.
A preliminary investigation found a Volkswagen and a dump truck collided in the median, causing the dump truck to overturn, state police said. Both drivers suffered major injuries in the crash.
State police said the driver of the Volkswagen was airlifted to MCV Richmond, while the driver of the dump truck was taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center.
Westbound lanes remained shutdown several hours following the crash. Traffic cameras showed crews on scene working to remove the overturned dump truck from the median.
The Virginia Department of Transportation put a detour in place to guide motorists around the scene.
Motorists were detoured to Exit 242 at Humelsine Parkway (VA-199), before getting back on the interstate at Colonial National Historic Highway. Eastbound lanes were reopened shortly before 6 a.m.
One lane on the westbound side was reopened to traffic just before 10 a.m.
