Community laces up for annual CHKD RunWalk for the kids

News

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – For 13 years, WAVY-TV 10 and FOX-43 have been proud partners of the CHKD RunWalk for the Kids.

Megan Hopkins, whose daughter was in the NICU, said, “We’re just all so thankful for everything the hospital’s done for our babies and we’re just excited to be here and give back.”

Hopkins is part of team “NICU SUPERHEROES” — a team 40 people strong taking part in today’s CHKD RunWalk for the kids.

For Hopkins, CHKD changed her daughter’s life. “She was born at one pound, five ounces and she spent 4 and a half months in the NICU seeing all kinds of specialists, neonatologists, the nurses, everyone was great,” Hopkins said.  “Caring for her, caring for the needs of our family, and we are happy to have her home.”

Proceeds from this year’s event go to CHKD’s Behavioral Health Program.  In year’s past, they’ve purchased a pediatric ambulance, medical cribs, and ventilators for the NICU.

Runners laced up for a variety of reasons. As 10 On Your Side’s Jason Marks put it — knowing who and why is more important than race times. He said, “I was absolutely terrible but I’m not only here to get some exercise, but I’m here to support the children over at the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters.  It’s a great organization and anything we can do here at WAVY or just by participating is great.”
