Coast Guard sets Port Condition Yankee for Hampton Roads ahead of Michael

News

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — The Coast Guard Captain of the Port for the Hampton Roads area has set Port Condition Yankee at 4 p.m. on Wednesday ahead of Tropical Storm Michael.

Vessels can leave if their intention is to go directly to sea before Port Condition Modified Zulu goes into effect around 10 p.m., according to a Coast Guard press release.

The Coast Guard is warning citizens to stay off the water, properly prepare and stay informed during this storm. As storm conditions strengthen, the Coast Guard’s search and rescue capabilities will decrease.

Owners of large boats and vessels are encouraged to move their boats to inland marinas and reminded to secure items like life rings and life jackets. The Coast Guard says boats that can be put on a trailer should be pulled from the water and stored where they won’t flood.
