searching the Chesapeake Bay for a boater who went missing Monday night near Cherrystone Campground.

Officials say 59-year-old Robert Brown left on his 16-foot green jon boat around 7 p.m. He was only supposed to be gone for a short trip, but never returned. His wife notified the Coast Guard, which sent a 29-foot rescue boat crew from the Cape Charles Station to search for Brown.

A helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City also assisted in the search, as did Virginia Marine Police and the Northampton Sheriff’s Department.

The Coast Guard rescue helicopter crew spotted Brown in shallow water waving his arms. They hoisted him onto to the helicopter and returned him to the campground. He had no reported injuries.
