WILMINGTON, N.C. (WAVY) — Coast Guard Crews helped four people and their dog after there boat ran aground Sunday night near Cape Lookout.

Officials say that the command center in Wilmington, North Carolina was notified around 9:40 p.m. on Sunday that a 20-foot vessel was taking on water by Shark Island, 500 yards south of Cape Lookout.

The Coast Guard deployed a Life Boat crew and a helicopter crew to assist. Upon arrival the crews found the boat had run aground and the people were standing in knee deep water near Shark Island.

The four people and their dog were lifted from the island by helicopter then taken to a nearby airport.

Officials say the individuals did the right thing in calling for help. With the extremely strong currents in the area, swimming to shore would have put them in a dangerous situation.

There were no reported injuries or water pollution from the incident. The boat’s owner will be arranging for salvage from the island.
