PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Strong storms brought heavy rain Saturday afternoon and with Florence continuing to churn out in the Atlantic, people are worried about the damage more rain could do.
High water outside of homes and in the streets is nothing new for some Hampton Roads residents, but it doesn’t make it any less of a headache.
“Maybe the first time you can deal with it, but when it’s two or three times, especially after losing two vehicles and going through that, it’s kind of tough to say… is it something I want to keep dealing with?” said resident Matthew Walker.
After heavy rains Saturday afternoon, Walker saw what he described as a river when he looked out is front window. Water was flowing right in front of his house and down the street at the Village at Western Branch Apartments.
The last time this happened, water damaged the inside of Annette Warrensprauve’s home. This time, she’s fed up.
“We wanted to be out of here this month, but it didn’t work out, so we are trying to get out here by next month,” said Warrensprauve. “We are trying to avoid all of this, but it’s the season for it so.”
A potential development of Florence into a dangerous hurricane in the Atlantic only raises more concerns.
“It’s kind of scary thinking if just a regular rainstorm that we had today, and it didn’t even rain that long. It probably rained for 30 minutes, heavier at times, but I can’t imagine if we go a week with rain storm surge and wind. Who knows what this yard will look like,” said Walker.
