NAGS HEAD, N.C. (WAVY) — Firefighters responded to a two-alarm fire at the well-known Christmas Mouse store in Nags Head on Friday, one that left at least one section of the store destroyed.
The town’s fire department said a call about the fire was received around 2:15 p.m., with firefighters from Kill Devil Hills also responding to the scene.
Early images showed the store engulfed in flames and smoke billowing into the sky. At 4:30 p.m., firefighters said the flames had been extinguished, and photos via Dixie 105.7 showed a section completely destroyed.
In the other section, the windows were blown out and the inside seemingly destroyed.
A nearby treeline was burnt as well as some damage to a cell phone tower.
No injuries were reported.
Locals tell 10 On Your Side this hits the Outer Banks hard.
“It is definitely a loss for the community, and it will be missed and it will be mourned if it doesn’t come back,” said community member, Sheryl Williams.
Ray Turner works at a local radio station next door, and says he rushed over after seeing smoke.
“When we arrived, we saw flames coming out of the back of the building, that’s when we started to call 911,” said Turner.
He says the business was open Friday but isn’t sure if anyone was inside when the fire began.
“The store manager actually showed up, she said she had just left before, had gone to the bank to get some change and when she came back she said now I’m unemployed,” stated Turner.
Turner says seeing all the damage is devastating.
“It’s the first thing everybody is talking about, how devastated they are for the community for the owners and for everybody that works there and for the folks who won’t be able to visit for some time … quite a while it seems like,” he explained.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
