Children find backpack containing stolen guns, police say

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (WAVY) — Children playing near a home in Kill Devil Hills last week found a backpack containing multiple stolen guns, police say.

Kill Devil Hills police said the children were in a wooded area in the 100 block of Camellia Drive on Nov. 22 when they found the backpack — which also contained items including food and clothing.

One of the stolen guns, a 9 mm Springfield XD Mod 2, was taken from an unlocked vehicle in the 1500 block of N. Virginia Dare Trail on July 11, police said. The other, a .40 caliber Glock 27 handgun, was reported stolen from a home in the 1800 block of N. Virginia Dare Trail.

Police said a third gun in the backpack, a Ruger handgun, is also believed to have been stolen. Investigators are working to pinpoint the origins of this gun.

All three guns in the backpack were loaded.

Police said the children, who are between the ages of 10 to 12, immediately notified an adult after finding the backpack. That adult then reported it to police.

“I don’t want to blame the victims, but at the same time, leaving your gun in a car that is unlocked is irresponsible plain and simple,” said Detective, Capt. J.C. Towler, with the Kill Devil Hills Police Department. “We don’t want a tragedy and that kind of what is going to happen.”

An investigation into the gun thefts will include fingerprint and DNA analysis, police said.
