SOUTH MILLS, N.C. (WAVY) — A Chesapeake woman was one of two people killed in a two-vehicle crash crash in a Camden County, North Carolina, community.
North Carolina Highway Patrol tells WAVY.com the crash happened on U.S. 17 in South Mills around 11:30 a.m. on Friday.
Highway patrol says 70-year-old Carol Smith, of Chesapeake, was turning onto 17 South from Business U.S. 17 when she collided with another vehicle that was headed south.
Smith and a passenger in her vehicle, 46-year-old Lillie Stewart Smith, of Palatka, Florida, were both killed in the collision, according to highway patrol.
Another 46-year-old woman and a 13-year-old girl were also in the car. Both were taken to nearby hospitals and are expected to survive.
10 On Your Side spoke with a man who works nearby and heard the crash.
“I ran as fast as I could to the accident site. The Suburban had impacted the car and there were four passengers in it and you know it was just tough right after Thanksgiving,” said Kenneth Daniels, Sr.. “We did the best we could. We got the driver of the Suburban out and over to the curb and out of the way. Then I commenced traffic to slow down.”
A woman who heard the crash says she sees accidents there often, so she is extra cautious.
“I don’t care who is behind me. I will take my time,” said Fatima Benson. “People don’t realize how much they have and how fortunate they are until you see things like this. That is the most horrible thing I have ever witnessed.”
