CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A Chesapeake teenager was accepted into 15 colleges and universities, and offered more than $1.2 million in scholarships.
17-year-old Malique Hawkins is a senior at Grassfield High School.
He says he started looking into schools that had good business programs last year.
That ended with him applying to 16 schools.
“”It wasn’t really overwhelming but it was amazing … I’m so grateful for the opportunity to have this choice,” he said.
Hawkins says he has a 4.4 GPA, but he’s also very active in his school and community.
“I do like being busy. I don’t like being at home doing nothing. I feel like there’s always something to do,” he said.
That includes playing on the varsity basketball team, being a class office delegate, being voted as homecoming king, being an actor, owning a clothing line business, being a public speaker and vlogging on two YouTube channels.
Hawkins wants to eventually manage a sports or entertainment company and leave a positive impact on the world.
“I’ve always talked about things with social injustice/racism, suicide, the bullying that’s going on in our world. I want people to know about these things and are aware of it,” he said.
Hawkins says his top four schools are the University of Miami, High Point University, North Carolina A&T and Georgia Tech.
