Cheriton council terminates town police chief less than a year after department’s formation

Marc Marshall

CHERITON, Va. (WAVY) — Marc Marshall, who was the police chief and only member of Cheriton’s recently formed police department, has been terminated from his position.

The town’s council voted 5-1 Wednesday night to fire Marshall, who had been placed on administrative leave by Mayor Larry LeMond on August 17. Wesley Travis was the only council member in opposition.

LeMond wouldn’t disclose why Marshall was under investigation, citing a personnel matter.

The Northampton County town that sits across Route 13 from Cape Charles had just formed its one-member police department in Sept. of 2017.

When asked about the future of the department, LeMond said, “We will explore other options to see what we are going to do next.”

The Northampton County Sheriff’s Office will pick up patrol duties in the meantime.
