MATHEWS COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — Two men were taken to Station Milford Haven for medical attention after their catamaran overturned near Gwynn Island Sunday afternoon.
One of the men had to be rescued by the Coast Guard. They were contacted by a resident who saw the vessel overturn around 2:45 p.m.
The other man who was on the catamaran was able to swim to shore, according to Coast Guard officials.
Both were evaluated by a local EMS team. The individual who was recovered from the water had mild, hypothermic symptoms.
“Although we’re experiencing warmer air temperatures, the water is still below 60 degrees and poses a serious threat to anyone who falls overboard,” said Lt. j.g. Brad Milliken, command duty officer at Sector Hampton Roads in a press release. “This man gave himself the best possible chance to be rescued. He made the choice to wear a life jacket, which helped keep him afloat, and a wetsuit, which helped him endure the cold water.”
The catamaran is aground on Gywnn Island, but it officials say it is not a hazard.
